There are classic movies for every generation and then there are classic movies for every genre.
SINNERS is a movie that is both a genre and generational masterpiece, bringing to back to the screen the art of intertwining the horror story, with period accuracy.
Coogler has crafted a classic Vampire film that encompasses the lore with folk tales that are cross cultural and used the painful history of the south, as well as music, as characters to carry the story along.
The tale of twin brothers, excellently portrayed by Michael B. Jordan, returning to their hometown in the Mississippi Delta to forge a life of success with the help of their cousin Sammy’s talent. Jordan’s performance of twins, Smoke and Stack, is something to be revered as the subtle differences twins have has been brilliantly emulated on screen.
Now I also have to take a moment to praise Miles Caton* for his phenomenal performance of Sammy.
The innocence of his desire but strength of humanity held his own with the heavyweight of talent around him. Caton’s Sammy, is key to the story and I would believe the truth of the folklore that ties this tale together because of his performance. SINNERS cant be spoken about without also praising the magic (both figuratively and literally) of Wunmi Mosaku’s Annie, who holds your attention in every scene and the skin crawling performance of Jack O’Connell’s Remmick, who wants nothing more than to bring everyone together…in fact this film was so perfectly cast I cannot fault it, it felt each character was written for the actor. But I without giving away to much, I couldn’t praise each performance as its something you have to see.
I am a horror movie fanatic, so i loved this film as a vampire movie,
I am also an avid fan of culture and specifically the history and world of blues music in the Southern states of America, so I loved this film as a folk tale AND i love a good film, so to see something original from the new generation of film makers was fulfilling on so many levels.
The cinematography, set design, make up, sound, everything in this film has been done right!
Go see SINNERS on the big screen 10/10
